Having your own herb garden on the windowsill is a must not only for hobby cooks. The fragrant herbs also look great.
Many kitchen herbs can be kept indoors on the windowsill.
Since space, light and soil are limited for herbs on the windowsill, a few principles should be observed when caring for them. In principle, however, most herbs can be grown indoors and are thus directly available in the kitchen.
Kitchen herbs for the windowsill
Fresh herbs add the finishing touch to any dish and exude a pleasant fragrance. But even those who do not have a balcony or garden, do not have to do without their own herb garden. Because many herbs can also be kept on the windowsill. It should be noted, however, that plants do not receive the full light spectrum through today's double-glazed and coated windows as they do outdoors and therefore grow more slowly indoors. This is because, unlike greenhouse glass, the wavelengths relevant to plants cannot pass through the window glass. The herbs should therefore be placed as brightly as possible. Perhaps a windowsill in another room is more suitable than the one in the kitchen. We show you which herbs can be used for the windowsill.
Sufficient light is particularly important for herbs on the windowsill

Chives
As for light conditions, chives (Allium schoenoprasum) is quite frugal and can be grown almost anywhere. However, since not all the light comes through the window, the brightest windowsill is best. Regular watering and fertilizing are important for windowsill chives. Since it has quite high nutrient requirements, it should be repotted into nutrient-rich soil as soon as it is somewhat larger. Our Koryphé Organic Tomato & Vegetable Soil is suitable for this, for example, as it has a high compost content and can optimally supply the herbs with its higher nutrient content. For harvesting, the stalks are cut off directly at the base and soon sprout again, because chives are perennial herbs.
Tip: Our Koryphé Organic Tomato & Vegetable Soil is also an excellent match for mint, basil, parsley and cilantro, because these herbs also love nutrients.
